Dr. Norman “Ned” Sharpless has been appointed to the position of acting Commissioner of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. He is set to step into the role in April. The appointment was announced by Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M. Azar III.
Sharpless began his track toward this position in 2014 as Director of the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. From there he stepped into the position of Director of the National Cancer Institute. He is one of the candidates under consideration for a permanent appointment to FDA Commissioner, though all such candidates are subject to review, nomination by the President, and confirmation by the Senate.
